TheResearch TeamofIPA Study Group of ChinaSecures Approval forInternational Psychoanalytical Association (IPA)ResearchGrantProgram——Advancing Psychoanalytic Research on Screening and Intervention for Adolescent Somatic Symptom Disorders

Recently, the research project “Research on Screening and Brief Intervention for Adolescent Somatic Symptom Disorders from a Psychoanalytic Perspective: Construction of a Diagnosis and Treatment System Based on Knowledge Graphs” (Project No. RG-2591),submitted by a team from the IPA China Study Group led by Dr. Heng Wu and Dr. Ping Yu, has been officially granted funding by the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) Research Fund . Recognized for its innovative perspective, rigorous design, and clinical potential, the project stood out among a competitive pool of global applications.

In the field of child and adolescent mental health, somatic discomfort without a clear organic cause is a common clinical presentation.

Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) is characterized by persistent physical symptoms, which are often accompanied by excessive concern and significant distress or functional impairment. These symptoms are typically not isolated phenomena but are linked to underlying repressed psychological conflicts, unresolved emotional trauma, or relational difficulties. For adolescents at a critical developmental stage, the body can become a "silent stage" through which unspoken inner pain is expressed via somatic symptoms.Adolescents with SSD devote their thoughts and energy to coping with these symptoms, which may lead to missed opportunities in personal and social life. Moreover, as the severity of somatic symptom disorder increases, they may also develop severe psychiatric comorbidities such as suicidal behavior, anxiety and depression.

Current research suggests that the onset, development, and persistence of SSD result from the complex interplay of biopsychosocial factors. Among these, psychological factors play a central role, serving not only as key predictors of disease progression and treatment outcomes but also directly influencing patients' healthcare-seeking behaviors. Based on psychodynamic theory, this project aims to develop a scientific, systematic, and practical screening procedure for adolescents with somatic symptoms, and to establish a brief psychodynamic intervention model applicable in clinical settings. By looking beyond symptoms to understand their psychological roots, the team seeks to provide adolescents with more precise emotional support and foster recovery from bodily distress to psychological well-being.
